What competencies and characteristics do I believe individuals need to cultivate to improve their leadership abilities and position themselves to be promoted? I always think about what kind of leader I want to work for whenever they ask me a question of this nature because I believe that to be the most essential and definitive indicator. If I have to look for a leader, there are seven characteristics that I look for that I believe would provide me with the right environment to be successful and to develop my leadership style and skills further. Here are the seven characteristics I look for if I have to look for a leader. And just in case you were wondering, the command is not one of them.

Let’s first agree on a working definition of effective communication to get things rolling.

What is effective communication?

Communication between two or more people in which the intended message is successfully delivered, received, and understood is called successful communication. It is possible to steer clear of misunderstandings by practicing effective communication. Avoiding misunderstandings saves you time. It can potentially result in a significant increase in your level of productivity.

The 7 most important components of effective communication

The 7 Cs of Communication can be thought of as a checklist that you use to ensure that you communicate in a way that is both clear and effective. These are the 7 Cs:

1. Clear

The goal of communicating clearly and concisely is to ensure that you convey the intended meaning of the message to the recipient in a way that cannot be misunderstood.

To have clear communication, two things are essential:

  • The recipient of the communication needs to be aware of the purpose of the message.
  • A language that is easily understood and not overly complicated

2. Complete

A message that is complete includes all of the information that is required to achieve the desired response. It should contain all the information the audience needs to know.

To ensure that your message is clear and comprehensive, you should consider the possible questions the recipient may have as they read it. Address these questions. When communication is complete, the person on the receiving end is never left with any unanswered questions. Because they receive all the information they want, which is essential, it enables its audience to make better decisions.

3. Concise

A concise message is brief and gets to the point. When it comes to communication, succinctness refers to conveying what you want to say in as few words as possible while adhering to the three other “Cs” of communication. For communication to be successful, succinctness is an absolute requirement.

Essential characteristics of concise communication include the following:

  • It is condensed and gets right to the point. There are no unnecessary words, sentences, or overly wordy expressions.
  • Both you and the person who will receive your message will save time and money by using this method.
  • The action itself does not have a repetitive quality.

When working toward being more succinct, we must remember that we must not compromise the message’s integrity.

4. Concrete

To communicate concretely, one must avoid being vague, obscure, and general and instead focus on being specific and clear. It uses sentences that cannot be construed in any other way. It also includes supporting facts and figures to underscore your message, but don’t allow anything that detracts from the focus of your message to be included in the presentation. The sender and the receiver develop a sense of trust with one another through this kind of communication.

5. Correct

When we talk about “correct communication,” the message has been checked for grammatical and factual errors.

Essential aspects of effective communication include the following:

  •   All of the facts and figures are reliable.
  • There are no grammatical errors in the message.
  • The appropriate language level is utilized while keeping the end-user in mind at all times.
  • If you communicate effectively, it will increase your credibility.

6. Considerate

Being considerate means “putting oneself in the position of another person.” When communicating effectively, one must take into account the target audience, taking into account the audience’s perspectives, histories, mentalities, educational levels, requirements, feelings, problems, and so on.

Ensure that the audience’s self-respect is not damaged and that their feelings are not exploited in any way. Change the wording in the message so that it better fits the requirements of the audience while still maintaining the integrity of the message.

7. Courteous

To send a message that is considered courteous implies that the person sending the message is sincerely polite, respectful, and considerate of the recipient’s thoughts, feelings, and opinions.

The following are characteristics of a courteous message:

  • It does so by taking into account the viewpoints as well as the emotions of the person who is receiving the message.
  • A courteous message is upbeat and centered on the receiver rather than the sender.
  • It uses language that demonstrates respect for the individual who will be receiving the message.
  • A courteous message does not display bias.
