How to Find Your Niche and be Good at What You Do

What is your niche? Before we dive deep into our discussion, it would be good if we define what is niche is all about. Without further ado, let us start.

 According to Google, a niche is;

  1. A comfortable or suitable position in life or employment,
  2. A specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service.

Whatever definition you think applies to you, the fact remains that niche is a focused, targeted area that you serve specifically well. It is small, detailed, and one thing that is known to you. A niche does not necessarily need to be an industry (ex. Freelancers. Dentists, accountants, etc.). It is your passion. Something that aroused your interest and creativity. Something that you think and feel you are good at.

It is of utmost importance that you find your niche because that would serve as your fuel to get going when the going gets tough. In short, you will not get easily discouraged when you meet challenges. On the contrary, your niche will keep you motivated to overcome those challenges.

But how would you find your niche? Below are few important steps that you must take to truly find out your passion in life.

First thing first, identify your passion and interests in life.

Along the way, you might have already done it before. But in case you haven’t, then the best thing that you should do is to list down the top 10 passions you have and make a list of them right now.

To determine your passion, you must be able to figure out the things you look forward to doing when you are not doing it. Let us say, for example, you want to be an article writer. Though you have not tried writing a blog like the one you are reading right now, you cannot deny the fact that deep inside, you have this burning desire of writing one day, sooner or later. This will help you find your real interest in life. If someone tells you that a web developer earns more money than an article writer, but you still want to be a writer someday, then congratulations! You already found your niche.

Determine the problems or challenges where you can offer solutions.

Have you already listed your top 10 passions in life? If yes, then start narrowing them down. To do this, identify your target customers and determine the problems that they might possibly be experiencing. Do they want contents that are relevant to the pain points of their readers or audience? Do they like to post an article that will showcase their new products or services? Identifying your target customers’ problems will help you determine whether you can solve them or not.

Do research for the competition.

Doing your research of the competition will help you in figuring out whether there is still a chance to excel in your niche. And if there is, find out how to distinguish yourself and have an edge over your competitors.

 It is time to test the depth of the water.

 Now that you are fully equipped with all the details you need in selecting a niche, it is time for you to test your idea. One thing worth doing is to offer your service to targeted customers or clients. At first, you might not get a client, but do not be discouraged. Maybe there is something wrong with your messaging. Doing a split test will reveal the better option, just do not be in a hurry.
